Misplaced Loyalty?

Romeo and Juliet both find themselves in the awkward position of having to try to reconcile their loyalty to their families with their love for each other. Who or what should a person be most loyal to? When loyalties conflict should your highest loyalty be to your family, your friends, your nation, God, or just to yourself?

  1. Your loyalty should be your highest priority. If someone cares most about their family, then their family should have their absolute loyalty. When possible, people should try to be loyal to everyone/everything they love.

  2. People should be loyal to whoever has shown them loyality and respect over the course of their life.
Whoever that is, that is who a person should be loyal to.

  3. I think someones loyalty should be where their heart truly lies. Not where someone tells them it should be.

  4. You should always place your loyalties in something or someone you believe in. If the person you are loyal to changes their ideals and morals then you have no obligation to stay true to them. If you are loyal to someone who is doing or saying things that you disagree with it might place you in a bad position.

  5. you should always try to be loyal to everybody but when your friends or family tell you that you cant be around someone like how Mercutio told Romeo he couldn't be leaving them all the time to hang out with Juliet MErcutio actually stopped being loyal to Romeo so then it is ok for Romeo to stop being loyal to Mercutio

  6. Personally, your family come's first. You have known you family for longer then you know your husband/wife. You never know what Romeo was thinking, he could have just ran away the next day and then you look like an idoit when your not loyal to your family.

  7. I agree with Ovie13 people should be loyal to what they want to be loyal to, not to what other people want them to be loyal to.

  8. I think that this is a really difficult thing to define because it totally depends on the situation. You should be loyal to your family and friends and pretty much everyone but (in Romeo and Juliet's case) their families should love them enough to let them be together.

  11. I completely agree with Maverick 3. You should be loyal to everything that you love, whether it be God, your family, your friends, be loyal. People say that loyalty can hurt you if you are loyal to the wrong things, but that is a decision you have to make. Is this something worth being loyal to? - jillninja14

  13. Yes indeed Maverick 3. Family is the highest priority. No matter if they are related to you through blood, or you consider them family just because they are close, you must be loyal to them first.

  14. Loyalty in the case of Romeo and Juliet is simply a bunch of words. Like when Juliet said all that is keeping her from her love is their names, and Romeo offered to swear off his name. It is just a bunch of supersticious ideas that have been brought about in our society. Even after Romeo and Juliet's deaths, the families agreed to cooperate with each other, proving that they could've taken that step in the first place. Loyalty in other situations should be granted to the giver's highest priority.

  15. I don't agree with Checkitout. You can choose your spouse, friends, and religion. However, you can't choose your family. Your loyalty should be to who you love.

  16. I agree collectively with a all those who said something along the lines of, loyalty belongs to those who you trust and those who are loyal to you. This includes anyone that has ever done anything beneficial for you.

  17. I think that we should be loyal to all becuase we never know who we will end up marrying in the end because I'm sure that Romeo and Juliet did not know that they were going to marry their family's royal enemy.

  18. Loyalty should always, no matter what, be placed with family. Family is the support of your life. they are always there for you. Family is more important than freinds or yourself. I would take a bullet for my brother always.

  19. I agree with the people who say that loyalty should be placed in the ones that we love but I also think that we should place our loyalty in the ones that we trust too.

  21. Being loyal is great and all, but you have to be loyal to the right people. If your loyal to a gang, is that going to get you far in life? Or loyal to some other cause that is doing good. You should be loyal to people who actually care about you and what you do. This could be friends, family, or whatever. But if people just want your money, your looks, your stuff, or other things. Is it really worth it to be loyal to those people? Once they have what they want they will leave, but people who actually care about you won't ever leave you.

  22. This is a hard question to answer because it depends on the circumstances. If you had to choose, than a good general rule to stick by is your self and your own beliefs. No one can live you life for you, so you have to man up and take responsability.

  23. Like I said who just have to follow your heart. Even if it's wrong as long as it makes you happy but waaaiiiit does that mean it's okay for people to kill people because it makes them happy? I think not.

  24. In my opinion, what's life without a little risk?
Family is important, thats why even they would put up with the mess you created. Of course family will always be there, but you can't just not explore; Where's the fun in that?. I believe us as teenagers should be doing things like this. It teaches us lessons, teaches us about life, maybe a lesson that teaches you the family IS important and that you should be more thankful of them what they do put up with.

  25. I think it is most important to be loyal to friends and family. If I was dating a smokin hot lady friend, and she wanted me to sneak out so that we could meet up and do naughty things e.g. SEXUAL INTERCOURSE, well in that scenario I probably would. This would be a bad decision though, because I would end up realizing that she was the most unintelligent person in the world, and I was disloyal to my parents for her. In the long run, friends and family are the people who you will be around and love forever.

  26. Loyalty is powerful it can cause life, death, war, peace. Loyalty needs to be carefully placed. Loyalty needs to lie in beleifs. If you beleive in yourself and your power to make decisions then your loyalty to you remains strong. When it comes to family your loyalty should not be immediatly given but earned. Just by being family does not give them a right to abuse or control you. Your loyalty must come only from you and what you beleive. With loyalty to a nation and to others the same rule still applies. If you are being treated fairly and in a way that you value then your loyalty is rightly placed.

  27. I think you should be loyal to your family, but if you had the choice between your husband/wife who wants to do whats right for you, and a family who doesn't care what you think, you should be loyal to the spouse

  28. A bunch of you are saying family is what you should be loyal to. But what if you don't believe that your family's ideals are right? Should you still be loyal to them even if you don't agree with the choices they're making? Even though they are your family, you are not obligated to be loyal to them just because they are blood-related.

  32. i disagree with major payne i think that many times your family can be people that are not looking for the best for you and are bad people sometimes. so i think that just because they are family does not mean you should always be loyal thats just the way it is.

  40. I think if Romeo and Juliet were turely in love than I think this whole loyality thing shouldn't had matter. It would have been better o just come out and say were in love and there is nothing you can do about it. But if they didn't do that, in this case I would be loyal to my friends or boyfriend because if my family isn't allowing me to be happy with some I love just because a battle between two families than I wouldnt want to be loyal to them.

  41. I believe you should be loyal to everyone you love and trust, but i also believe that you need to be loyal to yourself. You have to "follow your heart" to get what you want. It is very important to be loyal to your parents if they stay loyal to you. If your parents are trying to do something to hurt you you shouldnt have to be loyal to them. For example, when Juliets father when he was trying to make her marry Paris even though she said no. I agree with Pinklady, teenagers do need to learn their own lessons in life because it makes you a better person.

  47. i agree with Boston's Fine$t you should be loyal to the people you love. but i also think that loyalty is some thing gained because if some one you love is not be ing loyal than why should you be loyal to them if they dont give a flying chichen about the loyalty you have for them.

  48. PinkPrincess is right. Loyalty is like respect. Earned, not given as a gift. You don't automatically become loyal to your boyfriend/girlfriend just because they are. They need to earn it.

  49. People in society's where people can't speak out against the government are forced to be loyal. Punishment for not begin loyal is death. True, they don't have to be loyal, but then again, there wouldn't be anyone alive who is disloyal.
